Core of my Art Exhibition

Article written by Deb Wood

Art exhibitions presented by the Moonambel Arts and History Group at the Moonambel Pavilion are always eagerly anticipated events. This year a particularly innovative and exciting approach has been taken.

Invited artists have been asked to show not only their finished art work but to reveal to the public the processes they have undertaken to arrive at the final work.

As one of the curators of the show, Sanne Malkaer, says, “ We thought this would be of great interest to the community as it provides an insight into the journey an artist makes towards a completed work”.

This approach means that, alongside the completed painting, drawing, sculpture or print, there will be displayed; sketches, photos, Marquettes, objects and visual diaries.

All the artists were keen to participate in this project as they felt that showing how their concepts grow and change throughout the art-making process would be both educational and inspiring for others.

Kevin Free, the highly regarded sculptor, said, “ I have always wanted to be part of a show like this – and often wanted to do something like this when I was the Chair of the Ararat Regional Gallery Board. I believe a show like this will help to take away some of the mystery of art-making and also be inspiring for artists to see how other artists work. My work is very experimental, being abstract and in stone , and part of the excitement is that you can never fully know how it will end up. There is a degree of serendipity in the process and, most importantly, know
ing when to finish.”

The artists exhibiting are; Kevin Free, Deb Harman, Merri Hogan, Kaye Hutton, Helen Scott-Toyne, Sanne Malkaer, Deb Wood, Barry Fox and Maggie Barnes-Oake. The Sundial Project by Adrian van den Bergen will also be featured.

The exhibition will be open Sat 5 October, 9am - 5pm. Sunday 10am - 5pm. (gold coin donation). On the Sunday, all are welcome at the 'Meet & Mingle' starting at 3pm where light refreshments will be served.

There will also be a Saturday Market at the recreational reserve from 9am – 1.30pm.
